Prepare for an English Certification or learn in tailored lessons?

We typically associate learning a language with obtaining an English Language Certificate that reflects our English level. But is it really worth studying English for an exam or should we rather learn English for real life use? In this article we look into preparing for and English certification vs learning English in tailored lessons.

What do English courses to prepare for an English language exam look like?

People usually take English exams to get a certification of their English level which they may need for a job or for studies. Often these courses take place in group lessons, since all students have the same goal.

English courses that prepare students for a certification cover the grammar and vocabulary students will need to pass the exam. Since most official English certifications include speaking, reading, writing and listening exams, students do a lot of exercises to prepare for this examination.

What does tailored English training look like?

Tailored English lessons that prepare for the use in real situations are more likely to be held in private lessons. Because the goal of teaching English is to prepare the students to actually use English in their day-to-day life, the lessons do not normally follow a generic textbook or lesson. One-to-one tuition can be fully tailored to the student’s needs. Classes can focus on real-world or business related topics.

What they all have in common, however, is to practise English the way it’s used in different situations. Practice means you speak it, so real-life English practice means that you will focus a lot more on speaking.

So should I choose an English certification course or take tailored English lessons?

It really depends on your goals and your personal situation. Certificates might be requested by  some universities or companies.  However, bear in mind that you will only be prepared for general grammar, vocabulary and use of the English language. Even after you have successfully completed and received the certificate, you might still struggle when it comes to applying English at work or whilst travelling. That is because the courses focus on reaching a certain grammar level and studying vocabulary.

Since tailored lessons deal with real-life situations, you deal with topics that are relevant in your life. These lessons are usually more engaging. If you have the chance to learn from and speak with native teachers, you are more likely to learn English that is actually used in real life, including common expressions and idioms. Your confidence will increase and you will feel prepared to speak English in any situation.

In short: If you need an English certificate, a grammar course might be the best for you. However, if you are looking for English lessons that prepare you to use English in real-world-situations, one-to-one tailored lessons will bring you to your goal.
